Bihar Heritage Development Society, Patna in collaboration with History Department, Physics Department and Chemistry Department of Patna Women’s College had organized a lecture titled ‘Role of Science in Archaeology’ by Prof. Krishnan Krishnan Nampoothiri, Professor Emeritus in Archaeology at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara and Guest Professor at IIT Gandhinagar. The lecture was organized so as to familiarize students from varied faculties such as History, Physics and Chemistry the importance of scientific inquiry in the discipline of archaeology. Prof. Krishnan explained the usage of GPR in detecting archaeological structural sites without excavating as excavation is not always viable. He also explained the use of chemistry, thin section analysis, XRF and XRD in the analysis of ceramics which is found on all sites in huge quantity. Students got a clear idea about artefact analysis and the various scientific methods that can be utilized for artefactual analysis. Dr Aparajita Krishna, Dean of Faculty of Science and Head of Physics Department delivered the vote of thanks and encouraged the students to think beyond their own discipline and work towards developing a multi – disciplinary approach.
