Prof. Osmund Bopearachchi’s Talk at The Bihar Museum

A lecture by Prof. Osmund Bopearachchi was organised by Bihar Heritage Development Society in collaboration with Bihar Museum and department of Ancient Indian History & Archaeology, Patna University on 16th February, 2023. Prof Osmund, is a renowned Archaeologist, numismatist and art historian he has worked extensively on South Asia and South East Asia. He is the Emeritus Director of Research of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (C.N.R.S.-E.N.S. Paris), former Adjunct Professor of Central and South Asian Art, Archaeology, and Numismatics, University of California, Berkeley and former Visiting Professor and Member of the Doctoral School of the Paris-Sorbonne University.  He spoke on the topic titled “Bihar & Sri Lanka: Diffusion of Mahayana Images through Trade”. The talk revolved around the diffusion of Buddhist sculptures from the Indian mainland to the surrounding zones. Different forms of Avalokitesvara was also an important part of the lecture along with a ship wreck excavation in Sri Lanka. The talk was attended by over 120 participants comprising of students from Patna University Archaeology Department, Head of Department and students from Department of History, A N College and others. Participants were welcomed by Dr Bijoy Kumar Choudhary, Executive Director, BHDS and the talk was concluded by Shri. Anjani Kumar Singh, Director General, Bihar Museum and an interesting discussion followed the lecture.
